LASIK Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about LASIK.

What is LASIK?

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Right before your procedure, your surgeon will place numbing eye drops into both of your eyes. While you may still feel a little bit of pressure during the procedure, you should not feel any pain. Your surgeon may also give you another medication to help you remain calm and relaxed during the procedure.

After your surgery, it is common to feel a slight itching or burning sensation in your eyes, but it should go away quickly.

Am I A Candidate for LASIK?

To find out if you are a candidate for LASIK, we take the following factors into consideration:

  • Age
  • Prescription
  • Anatomy
  • Eye Health

We offer free, no hassle, LASIK consultations to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK. Also, we offer alternate procedures like PRK, Refractive/Clear Lens Exchange which may have the same benefits as LASIK.

What is the Cost?

The final cost of LASIK will be determined on a number of factors, which will be assessed during your free consultation.

We offer a number of financing options to make all of our treatment packages affordable for as many people as possible. We are proud to offer up to 24 month, no-interest financing, which easily allows patients the financial flexibility they need to invest in their vision. We’re also happy to help you use your flex spend dollars (FSA/HSA) to improve your vision.

What Technology is used for LASIK?

When it comes to LASIK surgery, technology matters. Twin Cities Eye Consultants is one of the only centers in Minnesota to bring together the latest available LASIK technology: ContouraTM Topography-Guided LASIK, the Ziemer Z2 femtosecond laser and the Alcon WaveLight EX500 excimer laser. This offers each patient a fully customized, state-of-the-art LASIK procedure with the best possible vision outcomes.

When Can I return to Normal Activities after LASIK?

The activities you love will be brighter, more vibrant, and less hindered by glasses or contacts. Most patients take a nap after their LASIK procedure, and many find that their eyes feel nearly normal about 6-8 hours after the procedure. Most patients have excellent vision within 24 hours of their surgery and can return to work the next day. It is important to avoid specific activities for a few weeks after your LASIK procedure. Dusty environments, swimming, contact sports, and other activities that may irritate your eyes, cause you to rub them excessively, or place them in danger of infection should all be avoided. Our staff will give you detailed instructions for how to care for your eyes following your LASIK procedure, so you won’t need to worry about what to do.
