The Light-Adjustable Lens: A New Way to Personalize Vision After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery has come a long way in recent years. One of the most exciting new technologies is the Light-Adjustable Lens (LAL), developed by RxSight. This lens gives patients something traditional lenses cannot: the ability to fine-tune their vision after surgery.

Instead of locking in a prescription at the time of surgery, the Light-Adjustable Lens allows doctors to use a special light treatment to make small adjustments later. This means patients can “test-drive” their vision and get it just right.

Twin Cities Eye Consultants was interviewed by Review of Ophthalmology for their approach to cataract surgery using the LAL.  Their methods have provided accessibility and enhanced outcomes in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

For a closer look at this technology and why Twin Cities Eye Consultant’s methods are considered a “model of success,” check out the full article Dr. Folden contributed to in Review of Ophthalmology:

Why It’s Different

  • Customized vision: Patients can make changes after surgery to get the best results for their lifestyle.
  • Flexibility: Especially helpful for people who’ve had LASIK or other eye procedures in the past, where lens calculations can be more complex.
  • Higher satisfaction: Many patients feel more confident knowing they can adjust their vision if needed.

How Twin Cities Eye Consultants Is Using It

Twin Cities Eye Consultants has found success with the Light-Adjustable Lens developing a collaborative approach in the Twin Cities area.  This approach has enabled surgeons to concentrate on their surgical responsibilities and allowing another specialist to focus on the adjustments and enhancements after surgery.  This approach enhances the care provided to patients who are well-suited for this technology.  Surgeons at TCEC were among the first in Minnesota to offer LAL technology, helping establish a metropolitan-wide collaborative approach, and have published 2 research papers highlighting their methods and outcomes.
